Polo Ralph Lauren
Southwest bohemian meets downtown cool. This is how Ralph Lauren describes his Polo women’s collection for fall-winter 2014 which was unexpectedly shown before the mainline. With her outdoorsy patchwork plaid hacking jacket paired with romantic dark florals, rag socks and clogs, the younger and cooler counterpart is more free-spirited than her uptown mom.
Halfway through the presentation, it’s time for the Ralph Lauren looks and the mood definitely shifts for a more uptown glam vibe including fur coats, pin-striped suits and flirty ruffled skirts. Evening wear embraces slinky silhouettes with dresses made of silk jersey in cool shades of muted grey. Even his jogging pants looked refined.
The J Mendel woman is sexy and strong, with magnificent multi-colored furs and leathers in vivid. The collection was all about bold geometric coats and jackets — some dizzying with the number of elements combined in a single piece. “It’s a celebration of our artistry,” said the designer backstage before the show. “Whether it’s Persian lamb or leather—everything shows the workmanship of the house.”
Minimalism is what one thinks when it comes to Francisco Costa’s Calvin Klein Collection and for the fall-winter 2014 season, an elegant restraint is seen throughout. The Calvin Klein woman balances fragility “with a cool, street vibe” as the show notes state. Wearing combat boots in tall and mid-heights, the Klein woman certainly looks like an urban warrior sporting menswear inspired coats, oversized sweaters and dresses in mohair and texturized knits. The color palette is suitably moody with a mix of grey, brown, taupe and pops of green as well as orange. Overall, fall juxtaposes casual ease and a cool elegance.
With clouds of pastels on coats and tiers of chiffon, Marc Jacobs‘s fall collection played like an ethereal dream sequence. Femme-bots in identical stretchy Courrèges-inspired uniforms of tunics, leggings and go-go boots in pill-powder shades glided by like so many stewardesses on a virtual trip to Soma-topia. Out of this world.
