party-ready-makeup-toni-garrn01It seems inevitable that by the last hours of 2014 your flawless base, defined eyes and precise lips will disintegrate into a sweaty, streaky mess. But these six make-up tricks from three prominent make-up artists will ensure you walk out of the party as fresh faced as you walked in.

1. Priming is paramount

We always forget about primers,” says make-up artist Bianca Hartkopf, “It is a magical trick that makes make-up stay on all night.” Sonic Sarwate, senior artist M.A.C., reiterates her point and recommends M.A.C’s Prep + Prime range for the face, eyes and lips.

2. Intensify the colour

When you apply makeup, remember that it will lighten through the night so it might not be a bad idea to start off with a slightly more intense colour palette,” suggests Sarwate. This doesn’t mean excessive product. “I strictly mean use darker shades that have an impact even if they begin to fade,” says Sarwate.

3. Lay off the cream

Cream-based products tend to bleed and strip off with sweat,” says Sarwate. Powder and mineral-based products will stay fresh and dry. “First blend the foundation with a foundation brush in circular motion to achieve an air brush finish. Then set it with a loose powder,” advises Stafford Braganza, national make-up artist, Lancôme.

A compact with a sponge applicator should be one of the essentials you carry in your party clutch. When in a sticky situation, just dab your face dry.

Matte lipsticks stay on a lot longer than any other lipsticks,” says Hartkopf. “That’s why if I am doing a bright lip for the evening it [a matte colour] is a must.”

5. Layer eye make-up

To enhance your eye make-up and have it stay in place for longer, Hartkopf’s technique is to cover the lid with an eye paint or pencil and set with a powder eyeshadow.

Use waterproof products wherever possible; mascaras and eye liners especially. To increase the longevity of powder products, Hartkopf recommends you invest in a mixing medium. She says, “You can mix with any of your products and that’ll make it long-lasting and waterproof.
