Marc Jacobs Mod NoirInspired by the 60s fashion called “Mod” and black and white stripes, iconic American fashion designer Marc Jacobs has announced a brand new fragrance for Spring 2015. Named ‘Mod Noir‘, the new perfume is inspired by the beautiful scent of gardenias – which were the blooms that were the base of his first fragrance with LVMH almost a decade ago.

Despite being a heavy hitter in fashion, having a successful cosmetics line, and being in the scent business for so long, Jacobs remains passionate about it, telling WWD, “Every time I go to an airport or open a magazine [and see one], I think, ‘Wow, I’m a real designer. I have a perfume.’”   The designer also noted that even he himself is surprised by the number of fragrances he has: “I have the same basic attitude toward everything — I get very excited about doing new things and projects,” he said. “When fragrances first started, I was superexcited about being able to do it, and I thought, ‘Well, we’ll see how it goes. If it works, then we’ll do more, and if it doesn’t, we’ll try again to do something else.’ The best test is the customer.

ModNoir1Mod Noir is created in a chic, modern, bold and unique spirit; playing a parallel between classic simplicity and contemporary sophistication. The bottle is designed by Marc Jacobs himself, with graphic black and white stripes (which happens to be also Sephora’s brand colors). The lacquered surface of the bottle makes the contrast with opaque glass that reveals the fluid. The stopper is large and round.

The new perfume is an airy gardenia scent (favorite flower of the designer) created in collaboration with Jean-Claude Delville. Its floral-musky composition opens with dewy greens that are enhanced with citrusy nuances of clementine and yuzu. The heart captures fresh gardenia petals enhanced with white flowers such as magnolia, water lily and tuberose. The base reveals notes of creamy musk, sensual and long-lasting, and an unusual combination of orange blossom and nectarine that leave a delicate floral-fruity trail.

The new fragrance will be sold in June exclusively at Sephora locations in the U.S. and Marc Jacobs boutiques before becoming globally available in July and will be available as 10, 30 and 50 ml Eau de Parfum and will retail for $70 to $90, and $28 for the rollerball.
