It’s a rainy Sunday night and after having spent the day with few friends just back in town, my boyfriend and I decided to stay at home watching a movie: what about “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds? I really love it especially for the job done by Catherine Marie Thomas, the Costume Designer.

For the black skirt suit CM Thomas found inspiration in the iconic 1940s look of Katharine Hepburn and I love this outfit because it’s strong, pinned-up and tight: it is fitted at the waist and the skirt goes well below the knee and is super fitted as well which always creates a sexier look. And all the accessories are perfect: diamond stud earrings, a nude Prada bag and black Christian Louboutin heels

But the first time I saw the scene in which Margaret (Sandra Bullock) alights from the plane in Sitka (Alaska) to meet her assistant Andrew’s (Ryan Reynolds) family, I was completely astonished:  Margaret was wearing a black trenchcoat, wide black patent leather belt, brown leather gloves, black Christian Louboutin peep toe pumps and Prada sunglasses. She totes Louis Vuitton luggage and, most outrageous of all, a gigantic orange Hermès Birkin – a little curiosity about this Birkin: it was borrowed for the film, not from Hermès, but a private owner.

It’s a sort of evolution, because for the whole movie the suit became a focal point to define Bullock’s character Margaret who in the end is still wearing a black tight skirt, but her beige and cream striped short-sleeved blouse is more casual and her hair is undone: CM Thomas describes Margaret’s arc as “going from buttoned-up to a reeling mess to giving into it”. CM Thomas proves that Margaret does not need a closet full of clothes to make her mark, but the right ones. I adore it!

E’ una domenica sera piovosa e, dopo aver trascorso la giornata con alcuni amici appena rientrati in città, il mio fidanzato ed io abbiamo deciso di restare a casa e guadare un film: “Ricatto d’amore” con Sandra Bullock e Ryan Reynolds? Mi piace molto, specialmente per il lavoro della costumista, Catherine Marie Thomas. 

Per il tailleur nero CM Thomas si è ispirata al look dell’iconica Katharine Hepburn e adoro questo outfit perchè è deciso, rigoroso e fasciante: è stretto in vita e la gonna arriva sotto il ginocchio ed è bella aderente, il che rende il look ancora più sexy. E tutti gli accessori sono perfetti: orecchini in diamanti, borsa Prada nude e scarpe nere Christian Louboutin  

Ma la prima volta che ho visto la scena in cui Margaret (Sandra Bullock) scende dall’aereo a Sitka (Alaska) per incontrare la famiglia del suo assistente Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) sono rimasta attonita: indossava un impermeabile nero, una cintura alta in cuoio nero, guanti in pelle marroni, pump peep toe nere Christian Louboutin e occhiali Prada. Aveva una valigia Louis Vuitton e, più oltraggioso di tutto, una gigantesca Birkin Hermès arancio – una piccola curiosità riguardo la Birkin: per girare il film fu presa in prestito non da Hermès, ma da un privato.

E’ una sorta di evoluzione, perchè per tutto il film gli abiti diventano il punto focale per definire il personaggio di Margaret che alla fine indossa ancora una gonna stretta nera, ma la blusa a righe beige e crema la rende molto più casual e i suoi capelli sono al naturale: SM Thomas descrive l’evoluzione di Margaret che da rigorosa ha finalmente ceduto. CM Thomas dimostra come Margaret non abbia bisogno di un armadio pieno di abiti per fare la differenza, ma di quelli giusti. Adoro!
