The one-time Queen of Punk, famed for her flamboyant designs, hasbrought a futuristic touch to the airline’s iconic red uniforms, with a feminine and flattering silhouette for female crew and a sharp Savile Row-inspired three piece suit in burgundy wool for the men. Richard Branson said the airline wanted to work with a team who shared “our spirit of adventure, who believe in challenging the status quo and creating something truly memorable.”
180 airline staff will wear the uniforms during a trial period of a few months to test their comfort and practicality. The final product will debut fully in 2014.

The female flight attendant uniforms are built on a foundation of 1940s couture cuts, with a feminine silhouette nipped in at the waist and a pencil skirt to mix go-to glamour with everyday practicality. One of the modern twists is the white jacquard ‘Frill Blouse’ design first seen in Westwood’s Red Label Spring-Summer 2005/06 collection.
Branson’s blokes will be decked out in three-piece Saville Row-style suit in rich burgundy wool with the waistcoat, jacket lapels and pocket detailing in grey.
Many items of the new uniform will be produced using recycled materials, including recycled bags for the ground staff which will be produced for Virgin through the Ethical Africa Programme, in collaboration with the International Trade Centre. They’ll be made using recycled canvas, reused roadside banners, unused leather off-cuts, and recycled brass, produced in the Kibera slum, Nairobi.
