According to the Associated Press, Tony Award winning producer, Kevin McCollum has confirmed that another passion project of his may soon be making its stage premiere…
Back in 2013, Kevin McCollum signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to develop stage versions of the studio’s vast library of films. The first film to get the musical treatment was the 1998 Drew Barrymore fairy tale Ever After, with Mrs. Doubtfire also reportedly in development. And now McCollum has confirmed a third project: a stage adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada.
Considering it’s one of the most quotable movies of our time (right up there with Mean Girls and Clueless), the David Frankel film grossed over $326.5 million at the international box office.
Meryl Streep earned her 14th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of icy tastemaker Miranda Priestly in the film adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s novel.
The comedy follows Andrea Sachs, a recent college grad played by Anne Hathaway, who gets a highly sought after position as the co-assistant to Priestly, a powerful and demanding fashion magazine editor. The movie also featured Broadway veterans Tracie Thoms and Stanley Tucci.
No date for the musical’s premiere has been released, and there’s no word yet on its stars. But… Hear me out: we all know that Anne Hathaway – who is currently in Julie Taymor’s production of Grounded at the Public Theater – loves a song and dance number (she’s an Oscar-winner because of one, thanks to her turn as Fantine in Les Miserables). Could she be lured to the Broadway stage to reprise her role as wide-eyed journalist Andy trying to stay afloat at a fashion magazine? Could Meryl Streep, who has recently lent her pipes to a slew of musical films (Into The Woods, Mamma Mia), take up the mantle of Miranda Priestly once more?
I’m clearly already dreamcasting… But, honestly no one can do it better than her. Not to mention Streep has talked about wanting to do live theater again. Or maybe they’ll just cast other actors. Because everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us…
